When the flowers of spring fade and are followed by early summer’s leaves, this is one of the few trees that still bear scarlet or red-orange blossoms among a mass of green. In September-October, it bears fruit that is orangy-yellow or reddish, with several edible seeds. Around 1900. there was a great vogue in Japan for pomegranate blossoms. Scores of new varieties were developed by the horticulturists, and the pomegranate bonsai are mostly relics of those days.
