American arborvitae (thuja occidentalis) SOLD

With it's excellent trunk and roots this American arborvitae - the name means "tree of Life" is an inexpensive outdoor bonsai gift for year round interest. The scale like leaves remind me of a mature Shimpaku Juniper - an exceptionally popular and usually quite pricey evergreen bonsai, so for the gardener on your list, this anniversary or birthday gift bonsai is an great alternative.
Also known as the Eastern Arborvitae or Northern White Cedar, this very hardy outdoor tree holds its cones all winter. It's an excellent winter food for deer, but that might not be a great idea for this tree!
