Here's a classic outdoor bonsai for your collection or a good friend's bonsai collection. The Bald cypress has reddish brown bark and looks like a conifer, but the the soft needle like leaves turn golden and drop in the fall. The form of this lovely tree is conical and the branches radiate out from the trunk in a spiral. If you're looking for a particularly rewarding bonsai for the beginner it would be hard to make a better choice than this relative of the redwood. It's fairly tolerant of both wet and dry conditions .
