Spiked Winterhazel (corylopsis spicata)-
This species from Japan was the first winter hazel known in the West. It spreads broadly, and seldom exceeds 6 feet in the ground. The narrow, pale greenish yellow, spring flowers have red anthers, the short spikes bursting from particularly large, pale green bracts which persist on the spikes. The arrangement of flowers is more informal than that of some other species of winter hazel.
