JAPANESE HORNBEAM (carpinus japonica)---outdoor,
One of the earliest trees to open in the spring, it has beautiful little ornamental hanging fruit and pale bark. A wonderful Mother's Day gift. The alternating oval shaped leaves are double toothed., The autumn leaves are clear yellow and suddenly drop. Fruit pods, tinged in red, develop in spring and last all year although they change to a light brown in the winter.
